Membership of UKCGE

Details about the benefits of joining UKCGE and the different membership options which are available.

UKCGE helps its members contribute to the development of the culture within the UK's graduate education system through the enquiry, thought and critical analysis of postgraduate education issues. UKCGE events and publications support this aim while membership to the Council allows those who are involved in postgraduate education, whether as Academics, Administrators or Managers, to meet on regular occasions with others in the field of interest. UKCGE also provide opportunities to members to enhance the quality of their work through participation in expert networks.

The majority of the membership are UK Higher Education Institutions, however, UKCGE is keen to extend its membership to include all institutions, learned societies and professional bodies which have an interest in postgraduate work. There are two types of membership, full and associate. There is also a facility for individuals who wish to receive information about UKCGE directly rather than by way of their institution(s). All members receive complimentary copies of UKCGE reports, publications and newsletters together with other benefits.

Full Membership:

Higher Education Institutions in receipt of funds for the delivery of postgraduate programmes, where the Institution subscribes to the objects of UKCGE are eligible for full membership. Full institutional members receive conference summaries, working groups reports and regular newsletters. Full members have twice-yearly opportunities to discuss activities and proposals, including the budget and audited finances, at the Annual General Meeting and Business Meeting. They also have voting rights at UKCGE meetings and individuals from member institutions may stand for election to the Executive Committee.

Associate membership:

To qualify for associate membership, institutions or organisations must have an interest in postgraduate work. Associate members may not vote at UKCGE meetings and cannot stand for election to the Executive Committee, but enjoy all the other benefits of membership. UKCGE welcomes applications for membership from non UK Institutions.

Both full and associate institutions benefit from reduced rates for delegates at conferences and workshops.

UKCGE has reciprocal relationships with the National Postgraduate Committee (NPC), Vitae (formerly UK GRAD) and the Canadian Association of Graduate Schools. The Council is also committed to expanding the base of such reciprocity, and the profile of graduate education, by encouraging more professional organisations and learned societies with an interest in graduate education to join UKCGE.

Institutional links

UKCGE distributes information about its activities and publications and maintains contact with institutions via a 'Link person' in every member institution. These individuals are responsible for distributing UKCGE material and information such as newsletters, publications and requests for information, to staff within their institutions with an interest in postgraduate education. As such, they provide a valuable and voluntary service. If you wish to know the name of the link person in your institution, please contact the UKCGE Office.
