The 3rd International Conference on Professional Doctorates (ICPD-3) will be held at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy on Monday 2nd & Tuesday 3rd April, 2012. ICPD-3 follows the successful conferences held in London, November 2009 and Edinburgh, April 2011.
The European University Institute, located in an old monastery on the hills of Fiesole overlooking Florence (www.eui.eu), is one of the foremost European centres for postgraduate and postdoctoral education in Europe.
Conference Themes
Over the past two decades interest in Professional and Practice-led Doctorates has generated some major questions on the global location of these programmes at the leading edge of doctoral education. ICPD-3 will offer a rapid up-date on current developments across the range of Professional and Practice-led Doctorates, with an opportunity to reflect on their wider impact on the international horizons of doctoral education.
Plenary Speakers at ICPD-3, internationally renowned for their work in doctoral education, will include:
Dr Thomas Jorgensen European University Association, Brussels, Belgium
“The impact of international trends in doctoral education”
Thomas Jørgensen is a Senior Programme Manager on the training of researchers, doctoral programmes, researcher careers and other issues for the Council for Doctoral Education at the European University Association. Before joining the EUA in Brussels, he worked as a historian at the University of Copenhagen, working inter alia on student movements and 1968.
Professor Alison Lee, University of Technology, Sydney, NSW Australia
“Trans-disciplinary and practice-based knowledges: issues for doctoral research and pedagogy”
Alison Lee is Professor of Education at the University of Technology, Sydney. She is also Director of the Centre for Research in Learning and Change. She has researched and published extensively in higher and professional education, with a particular focus on doctoral education, doctoral pedagogies, writing and publication, including professional doctorates.
Call for Papers
Contributions to ICPD-3 are invited on a variety of critical responses in Professional and Practice-led Doctorates, connecting practice, theory and related developments. Six broad themes at ICPD-3 will cover recent debates in Professional and Practice-led Doctorates, focusing on the many ways of understanding and developing practice. Researchers from diverse contexts will discuss these issues using a range of approaches and standpoints.

Accomodation in Florence
Please note: Delegates are responsible for booking their own accommodation. It is difficult to find reasonably priced accommodation in Florence during the Holy Week before Easter in 2012 in the run-up to ICPD-3, so early booking is very strongly recommended.
Accommodation in a range of hotel categories across central Florence, and also near the EUI in Fiesole, has been block-booked from Sunday 1st April to Wednesday 4th April, 2012 for ICPD-3 delegates by Universalturismo, the appointed Travel Agent in Florence for ICPD-3.
If booked before end-October 2011, some hotel rooms are also available from 30th March 2012, which can be extended on request.
Single-room 3* and 4* hotel accommodation from ca. €60 - €90 per person/per night (double-room ca. €80 - €110 pp/pn) is available on a “first come, first served” basis. Accommodation includes breakfast and all taxes.

Transportation and Social Programme
On Sunday evening, 1st April 2012, there will be a Welcome Reception at the European University Institute in Fiesole from 1800 to 2000. All delegates and accompanying persons are warmly invited to attend. Complimentary transport to and from the EUI will be available from venues in central Florence to the EUI from ca 1700.
On Monday evening, 2nd April 2012, the Conference Dinner will be held in a magnificent medieval castle, il Castello del Trebbio, in the village of Santa Brigida overlooking the foothills of Tuscany. Guided visits through the historic rooms, with wine-tasting in the ancient wine cellars of the 1184 Castle, will be followed by the ICPD-3 Conference Dinner. Guests will be served a traditional Tuscan menu, accompanied by wines from the Castello itself.
Coaches from central venues in Florence will transport delegates and friends to and from il Castello del Trebbio – which is located 15 km from Florence, in the Tuscan hills beyond the EUI.
Each morning during the Conference, coaches will transport delegates from venues in central Florence to the EUI in Fiesole, returning to Florence later in the afternoon.
