The theme of this year’s conference has emerged from feedback from UKCGE’s member institutions, some of whom feel there is a policy gap in the UK with regard to postgraduate education. The White Paper (2011) made it clear that the current government’s focus is on undergraduate education; however, the ‘Smith’ report (2010) authors, when addressing their Foreword to the First Secretary of State, summarise the situation for postgraduate education as follows: ‘Our findings confirm that we have much to celebrate about the UK’s postgraduate sector, but that there is more we need to do to respond to national and international challenges.’ Their report’s recommendations include some urgent actions for the UK sector, including the need for longer funded periods of postgraduate research by public bodies, and to better promote postgraduate study to individuals. UKCGE has therefore developed a programme for this year’s Winter Conference that addresses some of the questions in the sector around postgraduate education, covering both taught and research awards, and considers some of the policy and guidance frameworks currently supporting this part of the sector.
The cost of this workshop is £235 for UKCGE Members and £295 for non-members This includes lunch, refreshments and a delegate pack.
