Newsletter 62 (March 2011)
In this edition, the UKCGE welcomes three new members onto the Executive Committee and announces the Chair and Vice- Chair elect. The QAA report on their work towards “Defining the Characteristics of the UK Doctoral Degree” and the book review explores the philosophy of education in John Nixon’s “Higher Education and the Public Good”. The minutes of the AGM held on Monday 7 February 2011 are included and the Council publishes their new Memorandum of Agreement with Vitae. The full programme of events for this Academic Year is also available and the Council look forward to the second International Conference on Professional Doctorates on 20 – 21 April 2011 in Edinburgh.
Newsletter 61 (December 2010)
In this edition, the UKCGE reviews academic year 2009-2010 and reports on the inaugural meeting of the Professional Doctorates Special Interest Group which is run in conjunction with Middlesex University. ARMA and Research Information Network provide an update on their latest projects and the UKCGE Committee calls for nominations to its Executive Committee. The book review section discusses and compares the issues emerging in European and American Universities and examines how their remedies differ to those suggested for the UK. The full programme of Council events for this Academic Year is also available.
Newsletter 60 (August 2010)
In this edition, the UKCGE reviews their recent events and the “Forthcoming Events” section includes advanced information on the programme for 2010-2011. The Council also launches two new publications “Confidentiality of PhD Theses in the UK” and “Professional Doctorate Awards in the UK”. The Council welcomes new co-opted members to the Council and introduces the Honorary Treasurer taking up post in February 2011. The Higher Education Academy report on the findings of Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey and the QAA Scotland discuss their work on “International Benchmarking of Research Degrees”.
Newsletter 59 (March 2010)
In this edition, the UKCGE reviews their Winter Conference on 15 February 2010 at the British Library and welcomes three new members onto the Executive Committee. The “Forthcoming Events” section includes advanced information on the programme for 2010 -2011 and the Council introduces their Engagement Officer to the team. Also included are reports on “Graduate Schools in the UK” and “Preparing to Teach in Higher Education”. The AGM Minutes are reproduced and we look forward to the Summer Conference on 7-8 July 2010 at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford.

In this edition, the UKCGE reviews their most recent events and the highly successful International Conference on Professional Doctorates jointly hosted by Middlesex University on 9–10 November 2009. Following the results of the PRES and PTES, the Higher Education Academy and NUS reflect on the findings and the “Forthcoming Events” section includes information about the programme for 2010.

In this edition, the UKCGE is pleased to announce the re-election of Officers to the Committee and welcomes new members to the Executive Committee. The Council also welcomes two new members of staff to the Office and provides details of new changes to the website. There is an extensive report looking back at this years busy events schedule and the “Forthcoming Events” section includes advanced information on the programme of events for late 2009 into 2010. Also included are reports on “Higher Doctorate Awards in the UK” and “Quality and Standards of Postgraduate Research Degrees in the UK” . This edition of the newsletter contains the AGM Minutes from the Winter Conference, a welcome to new members of the Executive Committee and an article on recruiting Postgraduate students via the web. The Joint UKCGE-QAA workshop on Good Practice in Research Degree Programmes is also reported. Plus there is UKCGE's response to the latest HEFCE REF consultation.

The Council’s response to the QAA’s Consultation on Doctoral programmes features in this edition, together with the Minutes of the Business Meeting which was held at the Summer Conference in July. Also included are workshop reports on Knowledge Transfer and IPR, and What is a Doctorate? Additionally, the post-London Communiqué Bologna Discussion Forum shows that issues around the acceptability of one-year UK Masters programmes and the four-year Integrated UK Masters are still unresolved.

In this edition we announce a new collaboration with the British Library. It also contains an analysis of a short survey on the use of Independent Chairs for Research Degree Vivas. There are reports on the two workshops Postgraduate Retention and Completion Rates, and the Management and Supervision of International Research Students and the minutes of the AGM which was held at the Winter Conference in February.
